Tomato, ToMAHto.

Tomato, ToMAHto.

'Tis the season to be putting fresh tomatoes on absolutely everything. And by "everything" I mean open-faced sandwiches with a thick layer of Fresh Ricotta from Mozzarella House and a heavy freckling of Maldon salt.

It's summer perfection in a bite and the tomatoes from Moose Hill Farm and Langwater Farm in MA and Goranson Farm in Maine are here to tango with your tastebuds.

It wasn't always such a love fest between humans and this tasty summer fruit. Tomatoes were feared to be poisonous in Europe for hundreds of years, earning them the moniker "Poison Apple**." According to Smithsonian Magazine, this was because:

"...it was thought that aristocrats got sick and died after eating them, but the truth of the matter was that wealthy Europeans used pewter plates, which were high in lead content. Because tomatoes are so high in acidity, when placed on this particular tableware, the fruit would leach lead from the plate, resulting in many deaths from lead poisoning. No one made this connection between plate and poison at the time; the tomato was picked as the culprit."

Lesson to be learned: all these fancy aristocrats in plumed hats with questionable teeth could have chomped on caprese until the cows came home had they just changed up their plates.

**The French were always the wiser, assuming that tomatoes had aphrodisiac qualities and calling them the "Pommes d'Amour," a far sexier nickname than suffered by potatoes "Pommes de Terre." I don't know about you, but I'd rather be a Love Apple than a Dirt Apple any day.

So break out the crusty bread and the salt, people. The tomatoes are calling.

RECIPES (ME/NH)

(from Shannon)

Hi, Mainers!! Shannon (Operations Manager from Fam Din MA) here stepping in for Joe on recipes and I feel like it should come with a warning that I generally use exclamation points VERY LIBERALLY...  I hope y'all are excited about the selection this week as I certainly am!!!!!

Tomato Arugula Salad - All the summer colors featured in this beaut!! If you aren't feeling a salad, I do also love an arugula pesto

Melon with Honey Yogurt - Catch me on my porch watching the sun set snacking on some yogurt and melon (please don't, there's no way I could gracefully devour this).

Caramelized Shallot Pasta - Jazz up that lemon and cracked pepper linguine with some caramelized shallots!!! My mouth is watering just thinking about it....

Scallion Pancakes - Another team favorite recipe, I think I usually make this at least once or twice a year!! So delicious!

Monkfish "Lobster" Roll - It might be sacrilegious to suggest a lobster substitute to this audience, but one of our MA team's favorite ways to use Monk is like lobster as it has been historically know as "poor man's lobster."

Haddock and Tomato Grill Packet - I love a one-pan meal or even better: no-pan! Throw these packets on the grill and you won't have to heat up the kitchen while having dinner ready in half an hour!

Corn Fritters - You're supposed to have fun with your food, right?? What sounds more fun than fritters?!?!

Slow Roasted Salmon over Beets - Beautiful colors in this one-pan meal, and you're already ready for dinner!!
