Friends,

This week has been impossibly hard and unimaginably sad. While atrocities pile on top of tragedies we settle into a long weekend that itself is born of loss and remembrance. I get the sense that a lot of folks are retreating, instinctively and quietly into themselves to settle into their personal cocktail of grief, rage and overwhelming fatigue. 

We retreat perhaps because we don't have words to describe what we are feeling. And we’re not all at a loss for adjectives simply because we’re dumbstruck or ineloquent. Rather, it seems like there aren’t words because we’re not meant to be able to understand or express such misery - simply because that kind of pain should not exist. 

But as we cloister ourselves away, we're missing opportunities for connection, even in its smallest and least significant forms.

My best friend Shelby texted me the other day to say: "Let's pretend we're hugging for a second or two!"

A smile tore across my face, I paused what I was doing and closed my eyes to oblige. (She had, after all, insisted not inquired.) It was a moment of sheer, silly joy - one I desperately needed.

I hope the next few days present you with specks of joy that shimmer like tinsel and lift your heart up. And let me tell you, I'm not picky. Joy can come through hugs or hot dogs - take it where you can get it. 

And if you want to pretend to hug for a second or two, let me know. I'm your girl.

Grilling Tips - Grilling season is officially upon us! 🎉 There are countless myths and rumors and spells that folks cling to when it comes to grilling. Not sure how to extricate truth from folklore? I'd suggest cruising through this Serious Eats article as a starter and, if you want to get deeper, click through the link at the bottom of each section.
 
Grilled Cod with Chimichurri - Chimichurri is pretty magical. Herby, bright and a bit punchy, it's super tasty with just about anything you'd be taking off the grill. Most of you are getting haddock this week which will work equally as well.
 
Grilled Green Garlic - Another sign of the season that we're always psyched for is green garlic. Simply grilled, it's an amazing side (maybe to some grill haddock and chimichurri?). This Food52 number has some great tips and links to other recipes.
 
Orecchiette With Sausage and Broccoli Rabe - Rabe and sausage are best friends. This buddy film of a dish is one of our favorites. (Toss in some cherry tomatoes? Okay.) We also do a mashup of this and the classic Philly roast pork sandwich as a topping for Sicilian pizza. 🤤
 
Grilled Kielbasa Ring with Sauerkraut - Growing up in and around Chicago means my love of polish sausage knows no bounds. Very excited to get this in from Colvard & Co. I may have ordered some extra to bring home.

Tofu Larb - Larb is delicious. Salty, spicy, crunchy, fresh and very addictive. Usually done with ground meat, it's just as delicious with crumbled tofu or tempeh.

Grilled Lemongrass and Coriander Marinated Tofu Vietnamese Sandwiches - These are a major crowd pleaser. Also great with tempeh.

Quick Pickled Radishes - Quick pickles! Garnish everything with these. Except ice cream. Although I'd try anything once.
