LOVE FOR THE NEIGHBORS

A few months ago, we did a perishable food drive for the Chelsea Collaborative, a neighborhood facing urgent food scarcity in the midst of the pandemic. Your response was incredible and we were overwhelmed by your generosity and caring. Driver after driver came back to the kitchen, cars brimming with paper bags full of soups, pastas, diapers and wipes. It just kept coming. We were in awe of your support for the community.

Over several weeks we packed 7 pick up trucks worth of these loving gifts and drove them to our neighbors at the Chelsea Collaborative.  Their gratitude was humbling.

It made us realize that we are in a position to do more.

This week, Family Dinner will be donating $3 for every share we deliver to the Boston Day and Evening Academy in Dorchester to their "Moment of Need Fund" to help their students in these frightening and complicated times.

Alison Hramiec is Head of School, a wonderful person and loyal Family Dinner member.

In the world of high school education, Boston Day and Evening Academy is truly extraordinary. An alternative public charter high school located in Roxbury, Massachusetts, BDEA was created to serve any Boston Public School student who is overage for high school, who has had trouble with attendance issues, has been held back in 8th grade, who feels they are not getting the attention in class that they need to succeed, or who has dropped out but is eager to come back to school to earn their diploma.

The School's "Moment of Need" fund became even more essential during this crisis:

Lauren Barry, Director of Institutional Advancement,  told us: "Since BDEA moved to remote learning in mid-March, we have distributed nearly $5,000 (largely in the form of supermarket gift cards or bags of groceries) to BDEA students and families who were in need of immediate access to food, toiletries, diapers, formula, and other critical resources. Many BDEA students lost their jobs when the COVID closures occurred, and others have experienced housing instability due to the loss of a job within their family. The Moment of Need Fund has provided immediate relief while students and families await state and city aid."

We wanted to be able to help with the small stuff. Food, laundry, toiletries. Our goal was to donate $3 per share this week and thanks to all of your orders we donated $1,578 to the BDEA yesterday.

If you want to do a little more to help our neighbors, I am sure they would be grateful.  Their donation site is: https://bdea.com/support-bdea/

Thank you for supporting us, and the expansive network of local farms, growers and community organizations we are able to support.

Love,

Erin + Tim

**House Gochujang sauce from Perillas Foods** is a staple of Korean Cooking. This distinctive taste comes from gochujang, a fermented Korean chili paste made from glutinous rice, fermented soybeans, red chili pepper flakes, and salt. Enjoy on fish, chicken, in a rice bowl or on veggies. Here are a few recipe ideas from Serious Eats, if you're looking for inspiration.

RECIPES

Mediterranean Hake: A one pan delight. Keep some crusty bread on hand to mop up all the sauce.

Roasted Kohlrabi with Parm: Hello, weirdo little alien head! Kohlrabi may look funky but it is delicious. This recipe calls for 6 (six!!!) of them but that's a huge serving. You can scale down easily.

Carrots with Carrot Top Pesto: We share this one every year. And oldie but a goodie.
